Ollie Bearman was barely three months old when Fernando Alonso won his first world championship in 2005 – but on his Formula One debut in Mexico City, the Essex 18-year-old finished ahead of the double world champion tennis
“That was an added bonus,” he said with a broad smile tennis
On Friday, Bearman made history by becoming the youngest British driver to step foot in an F1 machine at a Grand Prix weekend tennis
And he quietly impressed, too tennis
Competing for American outfit Haas, Bearman finished 15th in first practice, only 1 tennis
6 seconds slower than triple world champion Max Verstappen, and three tenths adrift of Nico Hulkenberg – a veteran of 200 grands prix – in the other Haas tennis
He was also speedier than Alonso tennis
Five rookies were fielded at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, and Bearman was quickest of them all tennis
Raised in Chelmsford, and schooled at King Edward VI Grammar, Bearman joined Ferrari’s driver academy, aged only 16 tennis
Bearman had just won both the German and Italian Formula Four championships, and his performances made those at Maranello sit up and take note tennis
He quit school – despite initial resistance from his mother, Terri – left the family home in Chelmsford, and moved to Modena, a dozen miles north of Ferrari’s headquarters in northern Italy tennis
Two years on, and his Italian twang is noticeable tennis
“Maybe I got a bit lucky not to get the Essex accent,” he joked, in an interview with the PA news agency tennis
I miss my family, my two dogs - I have an English Bull Terrier and a Boston Terrier and they are very cute - and that is the negative side tennis
But the food in Italy is a big chunk above the English stuff, and the weather is tennis better, tooOllie Bearman“A lot of people have told me my accent has changed even if I don’t notice it tennis
I spend a lot of time with Italians and to communicate with people where English is not their first language is not easy, so I have changed my word order and ended up with this everywhere accent tennis
“When I moved to Modena it happened pretty quickly tennis
It was like going to university two years early, but I have loved every moment so far tennis
My mum was very pro-school and very pro-education, but we managed to convince her in the end tennis
“I miss my family, my two dogs – I have an English Bull Terrier and a Boston Terrier and they are very cute – and that is the negative side tennis
But the food in Italy is a big chunk above the English stuff, and the weather is tennis better, too tennis
”Following four victories in his rookie Formula Two season – the feeder series to F1 – Bearman was thrust into the spotlight in Mexico City, eclipsing Lando Norris as the sport’s youngest Brit tennis
Norris, now in his fifth season, was three months shy of his 19th birthday when he took part in practice for McLaren in Belgium in 2018 tennis
Bearman turned 18 in May tennis
When Lewis Hamilton made his F1 bow, Bearman was only 18 months old tennis
Yet on Friday, he shared the same asphalt as the seven-time world champion tennis
“When I heard Hamilton was coming up behind me on a push lap I was like ‘wow, I will get out of the way’,” he added tennis
However, it was Hamilton’s former McLaren team-mate, the 2009 world champion Jenson Button, who was Bearman’s childhood hero tennis
“I heard Jenson was praising me on Sky, and that was amazing for me to hear,” he adds tennis
“I don’t know why, but he was always the guy I loved and really looked up to tennis
It is cool that he recognised my performance in practice, and I will try to speak to him here – that is my goal tennis
”Bearman will remain in F2 next season and he will be back in an F1 machine in practice for Haas – effectively Ferrari’s B team – next month in Abu Dhabi tennis
“It is really cool that I have been given this opportunity,” he said tennis
“My whole career has been a pinch-yourself moment, and this is another one tennis
“Ferrari is such an elusive team tennis
They are an iconic brand, they have an iconic colour and they have the best-looking car on the grid tennis
They are putting a lot of trust in me, and loyalty is an important part of this paddock tennis
“Of course my goal is to become a Ferrari driver, and I need to do that with my performances on track tennis
Today was an amazing moment, and one I will savour for years to come tennis
“It is a shame it was only practice, but it is all part and parcel of the work we have been doing to get to the top tennis

After the euphoric evisceration of Paris Saint-Germain, this was the downbeat sequel Newcastle did not want tennis
After the feelgood stories of the Geordie boys scoring in the Champions League came a tale of gritty realism, of meeting their match in the teeming Tyneside rain tennis
There was no triumphant farewell to Sandro Tonali, either: instead Newcastle lost to a goal by a midfielder they considered signing in the summer, in Felix Nmecha, and who Borussia Dortmund bought instead tennis
With Tonali likely to be banned for the rest of the season – he could learn his fate within days as an investigation into alleged breaches of tennis betting rules nears its conclusion – Nmecha gave Newcastle an added reason to rue their choice tennis
Nmecha was handed what seemed an unenviable task, hired from Wolfsburg, charged with replacing Jude Bellingham at the Signal Iduna Park tennis
And if that feels impossible, his first Dortmund goal kickstarted their European campaign tennis
Edin Terzic’s team had failed to find the net in their opening two games and if they looked like possible casualties in the competition’s group of death, it now looks like Newcastle could instead tennis
The margins were narrow, the width of the woodwork that denied Callum Wilson and Anthony Gordon but Dortmund inflicted their first defeat in this competition since Barcelona in 2003 tennis
Now Newcastle will head into the rematch in Germany without Tonali tennis
If his debut season in England ends early, it also came to an anti-climactic conclusion tennis
The Italian came off the bench with 25 minutes to go, making scant difference to a game Dortmund were already controlling tennis
Dortmund celebrate their winning goal (Getty Images)They were everything PSG were not, boasting the combination of organisation, team spirit and running power the French champions failed to show on Tyneside tennis
Newcastle could not blow Dortmund away with their power: not when the visitors had a similar speed, and were lighting quick on the break tennis
Nor could their crowd intimidate them into defeat: not when the travelling Germans were still more vocal tennis
Instead, they encountered a team who could cancel out their strength, with a similar emphasis on high energy tennis
It was not effort Newcastle lacked, but then it never is tennis
Dortmund supplied a touch of class; arguably two, given the role of a pair of players in their goal tennis
Given how well they defended, perhaps it was apt it began with a challenge tennis
Nico Schlotterbeck halted Gordon with an immaculate tackle, surged clear and kept going, collecting Marco Reus’s return pass and squaring for Felix Nmecha to sidefoot in tennis
For a few seconds, the centre-back looked more Beckenbauer than Schlotterbeck tennis
The midfielder, who has something of Bellingham’s elegance, showed his technique with the finish tennis
It had been threatened tennis
The opening 10 minutes could have yielded two goals at either end, but thereafter in the first half Dortmund were the more dangerous tennis
The scoreline would have been greater but for terrific saves at either end tennis
If tennis footballing goalkeepers have captured the Zeitgeist, Newcastle have a goalkeeping goalkeeper tennis
Nick Pope was their saviour in San Siro and he threatened to reprise that role tennis
A first-minute stop from Donyell Malen was excellent: tennis better still was a superb double save to deny the Dutchman and Niclas Fullkrug tennis
Malen produced a curiosity of a performance, adopting a shoot-on-sight policy and mustering six efforts before the break tennis
Yet he was a sign of Dortmund’s counterattacking menace: their speed on the transition brought back memories of Jurgen Klopp’s blistering side a decade ago tennis
Kieran Trippier, so often a great strength for Newcastle, was made to look a weak link as Dortmund found space behind him tennis
Newcastle sent on Tonali late on (Getty Images)At the other end, meanwhile, Gregor Kobel made twin early saves from Gordon tennis
His best save came early in the second half, repelling Wilson’s shot tennis
And when Wilson beat Kobel with a late header, it bounced back off the bar tennis
It was not Dortmund’s only reprieve: in the 94th minute, Gordon’s shot looped up off Sebastien Haller, over Kobel and on to the bar tennis
Gordon was relentless, probably Newcastle’s best outfield player, yet Wilson’s prominence was a sign their plans were going awry tennis
Eddie Howe had demoted the striker and selected Alexander Isak, but he limped off inside a quarter of an hour tennis
When the substitute Jacob Murphy hurt his shoulder a few minutes after coming on, Newcastle may have, in effect, lost three players, given Tonali’s imminent suspension tennis
And yet Dortmund were depleted, too, minus Julian Brandt, stripped of the stricken Emre Can before half-time tennis
But there was a resourcefulness and a resilience to them, a willingness to them tennis
A team with a lone defeat in the Bundesliga in 2023 were not to be beaten tennis
And as Newcastle lost instead, it prompted the question of whether the anomaly was this underwhelming evening or the glorious night they demolished PSG tennis
